District Good Governance Index 2022
India is primarily an agriculture dependent country. Despite good geographical locations and natural resources, due to the lack of advanced technology and resources, the agricultural sector has not progressed as it should have had . After independence, with research and experiment conducted by agricultural scientists, the production of the crops like wheat, paddy, pearl millet and other related crops multiplied manifold times. This addressed the food requirements, but the income of farmers is still lagging behind.
In Saharanpur, traditional methods are used for farming of potato, paddy and pearl millet, among other related things.Apart from not using advanced technologies for crop production, reliance on traditional irrigation methods and unbalanced use of chemicals and fertilizers are commonly observed. Even for soil conservation, technology was unavailable. The availability of technology for soil conservation was absent.
The objective is to incorporate new technologies in horticulture or production of fruits, and vegetables. This can bring significant increase in farmers’ income.
The farmers who were included in the initiative used organic fertilizers while preparing the soil. This conserved the soil and also reduced dependence on chemical fertilizers. As a result, much better results were obtained as compared to traditional cropping. These experiments were new to the district andthe farmers appreciated them.
